  2. The Background

The violent break-up of the Republic of Yugoslavia during the last decade of the twentieth century shocked the world. It was the first war on European soil since 1945 and again people were persecuted solely because of their ethnicity. Comparisons with events in World War II were often made. For young people the atrocities in both wars raise many questions. How can people do this to each other? What led to these conflicts? Could we have prevented them? To help you discuss these complex topics the Anne Frank House has developed a programme that places the war in Yugoslavia into a broader historical perspective.

Aims

The programme concentrates on developments in international law with regard to crimes against humanity both directly after the Second World War as well as at the end of the 20th century. It includes not only an in depth study of The Nuremberg Trials and the war in Bosnia but also allows time for discussion, group work and presentations and a visit to the Tribunal in The Hague. You will meet with eyewitnesses from both conflicts.

In Paths of Prejudice and Justice you will gain knowledge about historical events, and you will develop a deeper understanding of issues relating to justice and injustice and gain new skills. To stimulate this process, the Anne Frank House will recruit a mixed group of participants; students from different backgrounds will bring their diverse experiences into discussions about justice and injustice

and issues you might be dealing with on a regular basis in daily live.
