ROLE - PLAY: CORPORAL PUNISHMENT

The British TV talk show HOT TOPICS has decided to organize the programme devoted to the problem of corporal punishment. They would like to discuss this problem not only in the scale of their country but to compare it with the situation in the Republic of Belarus. So, they have invited the representatives of different spheres of the two countries. These people are:

The mother of the 8-year-old child who has been given a clip on the back of the head by his teacher (English)

a. provide some arguments in support of your children upbringing system (no corporal punishment; children should be always explained what is good & what is bad; fear of being smacked makes children lie a lot);

b. express your & your child feelings & emotions after the accident you were shock when you learnt about the accident with your child (a boy), you were depressed; your child needed psychological help);

c. think about the punishment for the teacher;

 

A school teacher who supposes that there are cases when it’s necessary to hit children (English)

(you do not support the idea of corporal punishment but still you are absolutely sure that there are cases when it’s more effective to smack a child once lightly than to explain one & the same thing several times, it works like a sign which makes the child think about his behaviour);

a deputy head teacher of one of London schools (English)

(you suppose that a teacher’s desire to hit a child is a symptom of extreme tiredness or stress, the ways to organize teachers’ workload in the way which will allow them to have enough time for rest, self-education & private life, if teachers are in a good mood, optimistic they are patient enough to cope with the naughtiest children not resorting to physical means);
